TECHNICAL GUIDE · UHMWPE RAW YARN
Why Linear Density Cannot Predict Finished Diameter Alone
A short guide to avoiding an incomplete material assumption.
Linear density is the mass of a yarn per unit length; finished diameter is a geometric property of the completed line. The two can be related in product development, but one value cannot reliably predict the other without construction and process information.
Which variables sit between yarn and finished line?
The finished construction is a system rather than a single raw-material value. In practice, the production brief should identify which variables are fixed and which are still open before a diameter target is used to select a yarn reference.
- Strand count and braid construction
- Twist, tension and compaction settings
- Coating or surface-treatment direction
How should diameter be written in a specification?
A diameter statement is incomplete without a test condition and status. Record the nominal value in mm, any tolerance, the sample condition and whether the number is supplied, measured or still a development target.
- Nominal diameter and tolerance in mm
- Measurement method or device reference
- Conditioning and sample-stage notes
What does the supplied parameter set demonstrate?
The 2026 MFE reference section reproduces 8 PE braided-line series and 139 rows from the supplied workbook. Diameter and tensile strength remain separate fields, and MFE flags source-data questions instead of presenting a row as raw-yarn proof.
- Use rows to identify a discussion starting point
- Retain the original series name and units
- Confirm final construction before an order
How can a buyer prevent false equivalence?
False equivalence occurs when two yarn references share a linear-density label but differ in other relevant attributes. Our review compares source, package and intended construction before any claim that one reference can replace another in the same process.
- Compare documented source fields
- Run a controlled downstream trial
- Record results against the exact sample ID
